1. What are the software/hardware requirements?
NP-S2000
Windows:
Windows XP or later (with Windows XP or Vista, Windows Media Player 11 or later)
Macintosh:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) or later
- To play an iTunes library music file, a TwonkyMedia server is also necessary. For details about downloading, etc., see "TwonkyMedia Server License Key" in the NP-S2000 owner's manual.
- In addition to the above OS specification, there are operating specifications for the server software. For details check the server software manual.
Browser

2. Can I use the NP-S2000 with a Macintosh?
Yes, by using the supplied TwonkyMedia Server.
3. Do I need a computer?
You need a computer to prepare and manage music data to play on the NP-S2000, but you can play music files stored in an NAS (Network-Attached Storage) even without a computer. The NAS must be connected to a router.
Operation

- How do I get firmware updates?
1. Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. The NP-S2000 does not have a built-in amplifier.
2. How do I get music?
You can get songs from CDs using ripping software and save music files to a computer or you can download songs from a music distribution service site.
3. Is it compatible with the 192kHz sampling frequency?
From firmware version V3.00, music file playback in WAV and FLAC format created at 192kHz and 176.4kHz is supported. Regarding FLAC, some of NAS drive products may not work properly due to network environment and or other devices that reside on the network. Note that audio signal output is available only from the analog terminals for these types of music file playback.
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
4. Does it include a digital output?
It has one optical digital output and one coaxial digital output.
5. Does it include digital input? And can it be used as a DAC?
NP-S2000 does not have a digital input jack, so it cannot be used as a DAC.
6. Does it have a USB input?
No.
7. Is gapless play possible?
WAV and FLAC file formats are compatible with gapless play.
8. Does the computer have to be on all the time?
When playing music stored on a computer, the computer has to be on. When playing music stored on an NAS, the computer does not have to be on.
9. Does it have an up-sampling function?
No.
10. How do I get firmware updates?
Download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page and follow the procedure.
Network Connection
1. How do I connect an NAS?
Examine the following connection examples. For a more detailed explanation, refer to "Full system" on page 5 of the owner's manual.
The owner's manual can be downloaded from the Support tab on this page.
2. Can I connect the NP-S2000 directly to an NAS?
No, you have to connect via a router.
3. Can I use a wireless LAN?
A wired connection is recommended. An off-the-shelf Ethernet converter can be used, making it compatible with wireless LAN, but the sound may degrade.
File Formats
- What are the compatible file formats?
- Can I play DRM protected material?
- Is ripping software recommended?
1. What are the compatible file formats?
File compatibility is shown in the following table.
2. Can I play DRM protected material?
You can play Windows Media Player files, but because of copyright problems, DRM protected songs purchased from the iTunes store, etc. can only be played from where they were downloaded (cannot be played from an NAS).
3. Is ripping software recommended?
Yamaha neither recommends nor supports ripping software.

There are some differences in the graphics, but no differences in functions.
Problems During Use
- 1. When a problem occurs, what should be my first response?
- 2. Why even though I am using a compatible format, does music not play and the message "Unable to Play" appear?
- 3. Why can't I see the folders in the deep levels of the NAS?
- 4. Why can't I play a song I downloaded from iTunes?
- 5. Why is the album art not displayed?
- 6. Why are album and song titles not displayed as I edited them on my computer?
- 7. Why are there files that I cannot see or sort?
- 8. Why do the songs play in alphabetical order?
- 9. Why does a song stop during FLAC file play?
- 10. Why do I hear noise when a song changes in a WAV file?
- 11. When I rip in the WAV format, why can't I play songs in track number sequence?
- 12. After updating the firmware, why can't I see the NAS data?
- 13. When the player is digitally connected, why doesn't the first part of the song play?
- 14. Why can't I access internet radio?
1. When a problem occurs, what should be my first response?
Check to make sure the recommended software, etc. is being used, and check and update the versions of the NP-S2000, NAS and app firmware.
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
2. Why even though I am using a compatible format, does music not play and the message "Unable to Play" appear?
If the song title is too long, it may not play, so edit it to be shorter and try again. Also update the firmware. In addition, consider the possibility that the sampling frequency is unsupported (more than 96kHz).
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
3. Why can't I see the folders in the deep levels of the NAS?
The levels displaced after server selection depend on the server. The NP-S2000 can display a maximum of eight levels including the level that selects the server.
4. Why can't I play a song I downloaded from iTunes?
DRM protected songs purchased from the iTunes store, etc. cannot be played due to copyright problems.
5. Why is the album art not displayed?
The song is in a WAV file. Tag information including album art is not compatible with WAV files.
6. Why are album and song titles not displayed as I edited them on my computer?
When using the NP Controller, press the Load Key to obtain the list again.
When using browser control or the main display, the server (NAS) list information may not update, so check again after a little time has passed (there are products whose renewal times can be set by the NAS). Also, files may remain in the NAS trash folder, so erase files in this folder.
7. Why are there files that I cannot see or sort?
List information is displayed based on information obtained from the server. You cannot change list information on the NP-S2000. If the list is not synchronized with the server, update the list. Also check if the shared settings are correct on the server.
8. Why do the songs play in alphabetical order?
Check the version of the firmware. With firmware versions up to and including V1.07, when the levels selected are Artist or Folder, but not Album, songs play in alphabetic order based on the song title in the tag information. Beginning with version V1.08, if there is a track number in the tag information, even in levels other than Album, songs will play in track number sequence.
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
9. Why does a song stop during FLAC file play?
Updating the firmware may solve this problem.
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
For playback errors with 192,176.4kHz / 24bit FLAC files, please check followings.
- - Wireless connection via a router is out of recommendation.
- - Whether the software versions of your peripherals are latest.
- - We recommend to re-encode of FLAC files (compression level 3 or less). If compression level is high, you might face unexpected playback errors.
10. Why do I hear noise when a song changes in a WAV file?
With firmware versions earlier than V1.07, if a WAV file is played on some NAS, noise may occur, so update to the latest firmware. Also reset the NAS client table (check NAS manual).
For the firmware update, download the firmware update procedure from the Support tab on this page.
11. When I rip in the WAV format, why can't I play songs in track number sequence?
In the WAV format, you cannot add track numbers to the tag information. When ripping, add the track number to the top of the file name.
12. After updating the firmware, why can't I see the NAS data?
This problem may be solved by resetting the NAS client table (check NAS manual).
13. When the player is digitally connected, why doesn't the first part of the song play?
With certain components, this may occur when the sampling frequency changes, or when skipping a track, as it requires time to lock the digital input. This problem can be avoided by switching to an analog connection.
14. Why can't I access internet radio?
Check the NP-S2000 and router DHCP settings. When the router's DHCP server function is on, the NP-S2000 DHCP setting must also be on.
