ME (“Metal End”) type

ME (“Metal End”) type

This model is the result of efforts led by Yamaha Atelier Tokyo to achieve excellent playability and response. Based on a prototype ringless barrel, this model incorporates brass rings embedded in its upper and lower ends to give it a feeling of weight while preserving the warm tone inherent to ringless barrels, balanced with clear sound contours and excellent response.

VI (“Vertical Inlay”) type

VI (“Vertical Inlay”) type

This model has been developed and improved at Yamaha Atelier Hamburg in collaboration with European artists. It features a fine brass plate embedded into its center that gives it a clear tone and powerful playing feel without significantly altering the weight from a standard barrel.

Barrel fundamentals

What is the barrel?

The barrel is the section joining the mouthpiece of a clarinet to the instrument’s upper joint. The shape and material of the barrel affect tone and pitch significantly when performing, making this an important part of the instrument.

What difference does changing the barrel make?

Changing the barrel alters the tone and playing feel of the instrument significantly. Specifically, the following points change.

・ Pitch: Differing barrel lengths change the pitch, thus changing the amount you pull the barrel out when tuning.

・ Tone and playing feel: Different shapes and inner/outer diameters and thickness result in different tones, playing feel and resonance. The same is true for different materials.
